Have you ever seen white strawberries? These really exist and they are called White Pineapple Strawberries. Read how to grow them yourself here.
Pineapple Strawberries are also known as Pineberries
The white pineapple strawberries, also known as pineberries, are still relatively unknown exotic berries in our gardens, although they can look back on almost two centuries of tradition. And although the little fruits have a deliciously sweet taste, their appearance is what amazes many people.
Tip: Small pineapple-strawberry perennials are available in well-stocked garden shops or online.
Appearance and Taste
The pineapple strawberries, which are about 2 centimeters in size, look exactly like white strawberries with red nuts, which looks pretty neat. When you bite into it, its taste creates a real treat for the palate, because it is far more reminiscent of pineapple than strawberries - a successful combination!
Tip: Not only desserts and cakes can be effectively garnished with pineapple-strawberries, but also salad platters and cheese platters!
Extension
» Location:
If you choose a particularly sunny location, the pineapple strawberries can develop their incomparable fruity aroma even better. The right location for strawberries is also the penumbra.
» Time:
Plant the pineberries like conventional strawberries from around the end of July/beginning of August to the beginning/mid-September at the latest in nutrient-rich, well-loosened soil. It is best to fertilize them with plenty of compost in advance and let it settle well!
» Distance between plants:
You should keep a distance of 25 to 40 centimeters between the individual berry bushes.
Care
» Fertilize
Perennial white pineapple strawberries require relatively little maintenance. You can basically orientate yourself on the care of conventional strawberries. You should therefore use pure berry fertilizer for fertilizing this variety as well.
» Weeding
It is important that you regularly weed between the strawberry plants. For supportyou can also use special strawberry foil.
Tip: Plant a few onions between the strawberry bushes and their essential oils will drive away insects and rodents that are harmful to white pineapple strawberries.
» Casting
As far as watering is concerned, you should know that the pineapple strawberry must be kept evenly moist, but that no waterlogging should occur around the planting stock. Because that can lead to root rot or mold on the strawberries.
Harvest
The main harvest time extends from the end of May to June and, depending on the prevailing weather conditions, sometimes until the beginning of July. However, you should note that the small fruits are far more sensitive to pressure than their conventional counterparts. Therefore you should carry out the harvest with special care.
Immediately after the harvest, you must then remove all rotten leaves, rotten fruit and unnecessary shoots from the main stem so that it can develop enough strength again for the coming harvest year.
Tip: You can of course use the side shoots to propagate the existing strawberry bushes.
