Actually, ants are useful little animals. On the one hand they bring more biomass into the soil and loosen it up and on the other hand they dispose of dead insects from the garden. They are also very important for seed dispersal. Still, most gardeners don't want them in the garden. After all, if you're not careful, you'll quickly have the little animals in your home. And that can happen in a jiffy, because ants are everywhere in the garden and build their nests far and wide. And that in turn is the fatal thing about the whole thing.

Find and fight ants

As soon as an ant has wandered into the house and found a food source, it will eat it and return to the ant colony. She then leaves a scent trail, which allows the other ants to quickly find their way to the food source. They then mark the path again themselves so that the trail of scent and thus the path to the food source is preserved. What then develops from this is the so-called ant trail. And these are exactly the ones you need to track down and remove. You have several chemical-free options and means for this.

By the way: Some ant species are protected, especially the large and small wood ants. Don't destroy these nests!

Fighting ants without chemicals

Ants can often be found in mounds on the lawn, on paths or in flower beds. But stone slab coverings are also undermined by them. Even plants can disturb their growth. If the ants don't cause any damage, then let the little creatures crawl around in the garden. However, if you notice that they have found a way into the house or are damaging your plants, then it is advisable to do something to fight the ants.

Tip 1 - Relocate ants

While there are tips to combat them, in general it is almost impossible to get rid of all the ants. However, if it is just an ant nest, then you can relocate it. Simply put a flower pot over the ant nest. But you have to fill it with wood shavings or straw beforehand. To thisway you offer the ants a very attractive habitat. Leave the flower pot like this for a few days. Then slide a dustpan under the flower pot to move the colony. But make sure that the new place is far away from the house.

Tip 2 - flood the ant nest

If you have been able to find real mounds in the garden, it is advisable to regularly water the can. This disturbs the ants in tending their eggs and they disappear.

Tip / Home remedy 3 - Drive ants away with scents

Because ants use smells as a guide when searching for food, they don't like strong smells at all. In order to drive away the little pests, it is best to place strong-smelling plants such as thyme, juniper leaves or lemongrass repeatedly along the ant trail, or sprinkle some cinnamon powder, vinegar or essential oils on them.

Tip 4 - block entrances

Look for cracks and crevices through which the little animals can get into the house and seal them with silicone or glue. To prevent ants from getting into the house through windows or doors, you can use double-sided tape. The ants then get stuck there. Just find the ant trail and stick the tape right there.

Tip / Home remedy 5 - use grit instead of sand

If you want to prevent ants from spreading under the stone slabs on paths or seats, simply use grit instead of sand. The ants don't build nests in it.

Stay away from baking powder, boiling water & Co.!

Ants can be a nuisance, but don't kill them. After all, they can also be expelled or resettled. So never pour hot water over an ant hill or set ant traps. Also, don't sprinkle baking soda on it.
