Whether as weed suppressant, water reservoir or habitat for small animals: bark mulch is a real jack of all trades. And it's even great as a decoration.
Bark mulch is now offered in specialist shops in a wide variety of mixing ratios and made from different trees. As a rule, however, this is mostly a mulch made from spruce bark or other native coniferous trees. However, if you dig a little deeper into your pocket, you can also get higher-quality pine bark mulch.
However, you should take a closer look here. Really high-quality bark mulch can be recognized by the fact that it has a low wood content and it is mostly pure bark. An RAL quality mark is now even awarded for this purpose. So keep an eye out when buying mulch!
2 creative design ideas with bark mulch
❋ Idea No. 1 - Apply bark mulch in different grain sizes:
In general, bark mulch is offered in different grain sizes. From fine to very coarse, everything is included here. Nevertheless, the rule of thumb applies: the finer the bark mulch, the faster it will rot again. However, the only decisive factor here is that the same grain size is always used within a mixture. This has the advantage that a uniform state of rotting begins and the bed visually ensures a consistently constant view.
Nevertheless, you can decorate your beds very nicely with bark mulch of different coarseness. To do this, you simply have to think of a specific shape, for example, and then fill it with bark mulch of different sizes (reading tip: apply bark mulch - this is how it's done).
❋ Idea 2 - Garden Design with Dyed Mulch:
In the meantime, colored bark mulch is also often offered in garden stores. The coloring is for design purposes only. Red, orange and yellow tones are particularly popular. The colored bark mulch is also available in black, blue, green, white and grey. The good thing about it: colored bark mulch usually lasts longer due to its coloring. When buying, however, you should pay attention to which onesColorants have been used to minimize the release of toxins into the soil.
If you now buy different colored bark mulch, you can also achieve wonderful effects with this. For example, by working with shapes again here. Or you can give each bed a different colour.
Important: Lay the weed fleece!
Before you spread bark mulch in the garden, you should lay a weed fleece or garden fleece. This effectively stops weed growth, which eliminates the hassle of weeding. Furthermore, such a garden fleece keeps moisture and heat in the soil wonderfully, which in turn benefits the plants (reading tip: Fertilize under bark mulch - 2 options presented).
