Thrifts bloom almost everywhere and are almost impossible to break. However, they need a little care so that they can unfold their full beauty.
Thrifts (Armeria) are robust, undemanding, hardy and correspondingly easy to care for. In order for them to thrive, however, you must first optimize the soil before planting. The usual care measures then apply. This includes the correct watering, fertilizing and pruning of the plant. It also needs some protection in winter so that it can thrive again next year.
» Prep Thrift and plant in the garden
Sow the thrifts in seed pots from February. You can use ordinary potting soil as a substrate, which you must keep slightly moist. The flowers belong to the light germs. Therefore, only lightly press the seeds into the substrate with your fingers. Then place the growing pots in a bright and warm place. After three to four weeks the thrifts will germinate. Then wait another four weeks before bringing the young plants into the garden.
The planting distance should be about half the average growth width of the seeded variety. If you don't know the variety, use a guide value of 25 centimeters as a guide. The flowers develop a particularly beautiful effect in rock gardens. But they can also be cultivated as container plants. Always choose locations where the thrifts get a lot of sunlight. » Optimize soil for thrifts
Thrifts prefer a water-permeable and nutrient-poor soil with a high mineral content. However, the flowers also get along well with ordinary garden soil and almost all other types of soil. You should optimize the water permeability of heavily compacted soils. Simply mix in ordinary sand or pebbles before planting.
» Cut thrifts
Thrifts do not need pruning for he althy growth. However, if you want to prevent self-seeding from spreading, you should regularly remove wilted flowers. theMeasure has the advantage that the flowering period is extended.
» Water and fertilize thrifts
Water your thrifts very sparingly. The flowers also tolerate prolonged drought well and react quickly to too much water with root rot if the soil does not allow rapid drainage.
The nutrient requirement of the thrift is very low. Just mix a little perennial fertilizer into the irrigation water at the beginning of the growing season.

Thrifts belong to the hardy plants. However, if there is no protective snow cover when the weather is well below zero and the weather is clear, some varieties can react sensitively to direct sunlight, so that a shading device can make sense.
