If you want to bring your potato harvest forward, you can also pre-sprout the potatoes. You can find out how and when to do this here.
Increase the yield by 20 percent
If you want to plant your potatoes early and germinate them, you will be able to increase your yield by up to 20 percent, because the cold makes it so Potatoes nothing. Yet they continue to grow. If you want to pre-sprout your potatoes, then you should follow our little guide. All you need for pre-germination is a fruit box, mature compost or potting soil. By the way, you can pre-sprout your potatoes as early as February.
Pre-sprout potatoes - step by step instructions
- Get a fruit crate. Fill this with mature compost or with simple potting soil.
- Now you just have to push the potatoes into the ground. Leave the potatoes about halfway out of the ground.
- Now the boxes are stored at temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees. Give them light because they need it to germinate faster. You will soon see the first shoots.
Another tip:
It is not the largest potatoes that produce the best plants, it is the medium-sized potatoes that thrive best. Do not water too much and leave the potatoes in the ground until they are ready to be planted in the garden in April. You will then be able to benefit from a good harvest.
