Most garden houses have roofing felt or aluminum sheeting on the roof. With a green roof you stand out and show your green thumb.
A garden house is really something beautiful. Depending on which model you have chosen, you can store your garden tools in it or even live in it. After all, garden sheds can also be set up as small apartments. Children especially love it when they can sleep with their friends here in the summer. So they are not far from home, but still in their own kingdom.
Garden sheds today are much more than just storage sheds. A lot can be made out of it. Especially on the outside. For example, you can paint the garden shed or transplant flowers. Yes, you can even green the roof of the garden house. This looks really nice and is a real eye-catcher. Among other things, you create a habitat for plants and animals. The roof of a garden shed does not have to look dreary. With a few simple steps you can conjure up a small green oasis.
Types of green roofs
Experts differentiate between two different types of green roofs. The extensive and the intensive green roof.
Extensive roof greening:
With extensive green roofs, a layer of approx. 10 centimeter high plants is created that is very natural. To achieve this, mosses, herbs and grasses are usually planted on the roof. Low perennials such as houseleek and stonecrop can also find their place here. The specialist association for building greening (FBB) shows exactly which plants are suitable on the website www.fbb.de. You can also find a list of suitable plants at www.dachbegruenung-ratgeber.de.
Intensive green roof:
In the case of intensive green roofs, however, perennials, small shrubs, trees and grasses are placed on the roof. This type of green roof usually has a height of approx. 20 to 40 centimetres. As you can imagine, extensive green roofs are much easier to maintain compared to intensive ones because you can just let the plants grow. At the intenseVariant, however, you sometimes have to prune the perennials, shrubs and trees.
No matter which variant you choose: the green roof always works best on a summer house with a flat roof. This means garden sheds such as the "Miami", "Ibiza" and "Rhodos" models, which I saw on the website www.steda-online.de. Here you can best move on it and not slip away.
How to green a summerhouse roof
1First of all you have to clean the roof and then lay out a protective fleece and a PE root protection film so that the roof cannot be attacked by the roots. Then lay out the protective fleece again. The strips should ideally overlap by about 10 centimetres. Then cut the drain openings free.
2Now you need to lay out a drainage layer of mats. This is important because it is the only way to avoid watering the garden house roof later. These mats should also overlap a little at the sides. Also don't forget to cut the roof drain free.
3This is followed by a layer of filter fleece. This ensures the nutrient balance and also provides more support. Again, make sure that the tracks overlap.
4Now you can distribute the substrate on the garden house roof. This layer should be about 8 inches high. You can then plant plants, sprinkle sprouts or sow seeds. Just the way you want it. Finally water everything well.
5Now it's just a matter of proper care. In the first four weeks, you should water the garden house roof about four times a week so that the plants and seeds grow well. Otherwise, you only need to weed once or twice a year. You also need to clear the soil of birch or willow seeds.
