The rosewood tree, or jacaranda, is a beautiful flowering tree that can only be planted in tubs in our regions. All information here.
Palisander trees are a very special exotic beauty. In their homeland of South America, the jacaranda trees transform entire streets into a blue-violet sea of blossoms when they blossom. The palisander tree has meanwhile also become native to other climatically favorable areas of the world. If you want to surround yourself with this exotic splendour, you will unfortunately have to limit yourself to keeping it in a bucket. In summer, the plants can decorate the balcony or terrace. They spend the winter indoors. In order for the rosewood trees to thrive, it is important not to make any mistakes when planting. You can read about what needs to be considered here.
Plant Description
The palisander tree is one of the trumpet tree plants. In the wild, the plants reach proud heights of up to 20 meters. The jacaranda tree is characterized by a thin, brownish bark and a rather rounded crown. The filigree appearing pinnate leaves can be up to 40 centimeters long. The leaves are arranged opposite. stipules are absent. The blue-violet panicle flowers are considered a real ornament. The flowers, up to five centimeters long, appear in November and adorn the rosewood tree for up to eight weeks.
Palisander Tree Spread
When it comes to planting in our latitudes, the natural distribution area of the respective plant always plays a role. The home of the rosewood tree is in southern America. There the trees grow mainly in Bolivia, Argentina or Paraguay. The plants are now cultivated in almost all subtropical climate regions worldwide due to their attractive flowers. The jacaranda trees can also be discovered in Australia or on a trip to the Canary Islands. The cold-sensitive plants are not suitable for outdoor cultivation in Germany.
Note: The rosewood tree can withstand short term frost snaps in the single digits.
Plant Rosewood Tree - Find Location
About oneContemplating free range rosewood would not be advisable. Even in mild regions of Germany, the plants would not survive the winter. While short-term cold snaps are tolerated quite well, constant temperatures in the single digits over a longer period mean the end for the plant.
Palisander trees need a bright and sunny location. Full sun exposure is less well tolerated. South-facing window fronts are therefore less suitable. An east or west window is recommended. In summer, the plants feel at home on the balcony or terrace. The trees like high humidity. The hobby gardener can help here by spraying more.
The jacaranda trees need a lot of space, both in the tub and in the room. If you let your palisander tree grow taller, you will enjoy an attractive, branched growth and with a bit of luck you might even be able to marvel at the unmistakable blossom of the plants in our latitudes. When standing on the balcony or terrace in the summer, make sure that the plants do not tip over. Stable terracotta planters counteract this.

Select the right substrate
The palisander tree thrives best in a lime-free substrate. The quality of the soil can be improved by adding compost or horn shavings. This means that the plants already receive a high-quality natural fertilizer when they are planted. If you want to use a ready-made substrate, you are well advised to use azalea soil. Lava granules or expanded clay can be added to the soil to make the soil permeable and prevent waterlogging.

- nutrient rich
- lime-free
The ideal planter for the rosewood tree
With the right planter, you create the basis for he althy growth of your Jacaranda tree. So that the roots can develop well, the planter should be of sufficient size. The height is particularly important. The matching planter is about a third higher than it is wide. Take a look at your planter from below as well. Sufficient water drainage holes ensure that the irrigation water can drain off well and that there is no waterlogging.
Also remember that the rosewood tree will have to be repotted sooner or later. You can do this best if it is a conically shaped (cone-shaped) planter. If the plants have taken root and spread well in the planter, removing them from bulbous planters is usually problematic and if you don't want to damage the plant, you have to destroy the planter.
Planting preparation at a glance
Find location
Where the palisander tree is placed depends on the time of planting.
The plants can spend the summer in a bright and sunny place on the balcony or terrace.
In winter, around 15 degrees required.
The plants tolerate blazing midday sun less.
High humidity suits the palisander tree.
Select substrate
Palisander trees love nutrient-rich soil.
Therefore, compost can already be mixed in during planting.
The soil should be loose and permeable.
The plants do not like lime.
Azalea soil is very suitable.
Provide plant pots
Sufficiently large planters offer ideal growth conditions.
The height of the planter is particularly relevant so that the roots can spread well. This should exceed the width of the container by a third.
Conical planters make transplanting easier.
Planting rosewood trees - step by step
- Select planter
- Water the clay planters beforehand
- Water the plant as well
- Insert drainage into planter
- Fill the substrate into the bottom of the vessel
- Press substrate
- Put the plant in the middle of the pot
- Fill substrate
- pour carefully
If your planter is made of clay, you should water it for about two hours before planting. This allows the clay to soak up water and does not remove moisture from the soil after planting. The rosewood tree is also placed with its roots in a bucket of water.
Make sure the soil is well drained by using gravel or potsherds for drainage. This should be covered with a permeable material. Now you can fill in the first layer of substrate and press it down well.
The plant is carefully placed in the center of the planter. Now you can gradually fill up the substrate.
Attention: The soil must be pressed down well. Otherwise cavities form, which the rosewood tree cannot root through. This weakens the plant.
PressDon't touch the substrate too tightly to allow the roots to penetrate the soil. There should be a few centimeters of space between the edge of the planter and the layer of soil.
Water well after planting. If the soil sinks, top up with some more substrate.
A layer of mulch is an advantage at the summer location. This ensures constant soil moisture and prevents weed growth and insects from laying their eggs.
When does the rosewood tree have to be repotted?
As these are fairly fast-growing plants, it is advisable to repot young plants every year. You can tell whether you need to repot by looking at the plant pot. At the latest when the root system is already clearly visible, it is time to replace the planter.
Older plants require less repotting. If you choose a sufficiently large and, above all, deep plant pot, you will only have to repot every three to four years.
