The trade offers different types of lawn mowers. They all have advantages and disadvantages, which we would like to compare for you.

While in the past we only had to choose between an electric and petrol lawn mower, various lawn mower manufacturers now offer the modern gardener many more lawn mower models to choose from. In the end, it is difficult to decide on the right type of lawnmower. In principle, when buying a lawn mower, you should distinguish between these variants:

  • Electric Lawnmower
  • Gasoline Lawn Mower
  • Battery Lawn Mower
  • Tractor Lawn Mower

Of course, these four models all have their advantages and disadvantages. And this is exactly what we would like to explain to you in more detail below.

4 types of lawnmowers and their advantages and disadvantages presented

Electric lawn mower:

✔ Advantages:

The electric lawn mower is mostly traded with a very low purchase price in specialist shops and in numerous hardware stores. This type of lawn mower is also considered to be environmentally friendly and easy to maneuver due to its consistently light weight.

✖ Cons:

However, the disadvantage is that you always have to carry an electric cable with you when mowing, which of course poses a risk. Especially when the garden has many obstacles such as trees and bushes, sculptures, etc. And even high grass growth can hardly be satisfactorily mowed with an often underpowered electric lawn mower.

Gasoline Lawnmower:

✔ Advantages:

Gasoline lawnmowers give every gardener spatial independence (because they are wireless), which is why they are particularly suitable for large lawns. Many of these models, such as Husqvarna lawnmowers, also have a high speed, which is why they can also be used perfectly in high grass growth - even with blunt blades!

✖ Cons:

However, the petrol lawnmower has to be refilled regularly to ensure its operation. Which is why you have to make sure that there are always enough supplies available during the seasonavailable.

Battery Lawn Mower:

✔ Advantages:

The battery-powered lawnmower, which is also environmentally friendly, is often referred to as a combination model because it works like an electric lawnmower on the one hand, but does not require a cable on the other. This in turn has the advantage that the lawn mower can be used anywhere without any problems. A self-propelled cordless lawnmower even makes it possible to mow a slope or hill.

Robot lawnmowers have been enjoying increasing popularity for several years. They are also battery-operated and, once the garden has been prepared, mow the lawn completely independently and then drive to the charging station.

✖ Cons:

The disadvantage, however, is that the convenient cordless lawnmowers are relatively expensive to buy and, depending on the battery performance (approx. 24 hours average charging time), are often only suitable for smaller lawns. This is an important purchase criterion. See Choosing a Lawn Mower by Lawn Area - Our Buyer's Guide.

Tractor Lawn Mower:

✔ Advantages:

Tractor lawnmowers (also called ride-on mowers) are ideal for large lawns and parks. However, you should not confuse them with cutter bars that attach to agricultural tractors. Rather, it is a mobile, extremely comfortable lawn mower model. Incidentally, the tractor lawnmower is operated with diesel or petrol and is considered to be extremely powerful (average mowing width of up to 1.50 meters) and flexible in its handling.

✖ Cons:

Because a tractor lawn mower has a lot to offer, it is of course also quite expensive. So when you buy such a model, you have to reckon with at least a four-digit purchase price.

Another disadvantage is that lawnmower tractors can only approach obstacles as close as possible with sufficient practice. In some cases you may have to mow the immediate area around the obstacle again, e.g. with a lawn trimmer.
